Plumbing FAQ
Straight answers to the questions Brisbane homeowners ask us most. Still unsure? Call 0492 984 440.
What should I do if a pipe bursts?
Turn off the water at the main, usually near the water meter at the front boundary. Switch off the hot water system if water is near it, move valuables away and then call us on 0492 984 440.
Why do my drains keep blocking?
Repeat blockages usually mean something more than a clog: tree roots in a cracked pipe, a sagging section where waste settles, or grease build up. A camera inspection shows the cause so it can be fixed properly.
How long does a hot water system last?
Many electric and gas storage systems last around 8 to 15 years, depending on water quality and use. Rusty water, leaks around the tank or rumbling noises are signs it is near the end.
Do you give quotes before starting work?
Yes. We look at the job, explain what we found and give you a clear price before any work starts.
Can tree roots really break sewer pipes?
Roots look for water and get into small cracks and joints, especially in older clay pipes. Over time they grow and block the pipe. Cutting them out helps for a while, and relining or replacing the damaged section fixes it for good.
Can I use drain cleaner on a blocked drain?
Store bought chemical drain cleaners can help with a light clog but rarely clear a real blockage, and they can damage older pipes. If water is backing up, it is better to get it cleared properly.
What is an overflow relief gully?
It is the grated pipe outside, usually near the bathroom or laundry. If the sewer blocks, waste spills out there instead of inside your house. Water coming up from it is a sign of a sewer blockage.
Can a leaking toilet waste much water?
Yes. A cistern that runs into the bowl can waste a lot of water every day without any sign other than a higher bill. Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern; if colour shows in the bowl without flushing, it is leaking.
Why is there water coming from the pipe on my hot water unit?
A little water from the relief valve drain as the water heats is normal. A constant flow or a lot of water usually means a faulty valve or high pressure and should be checked.
Should I replace the flexible hoses in my home?
Braided flexible hoses under sinks, basins and toilets do not last forever. If they show rust, fraying or bulging, or are more than about ten years old, it is worth replacing them before one fails.
Where should my stormwater go?
Stormwater must go to a lawful point of discharge, usually the kerb and channel or a council stormwater pipe. It must not be connected to the sewer.
